Aspen Medical’s Dr Andrew Walker and Glenn Keys pipped at the post at the EY World Entrepreneur of the Year
So close for Aspen Medical’s Dr Andrew Walker and Glenn Keys
Following an intensive judging process over several days in Monaco, Aspen Medical co-founders, Dr Andrew Walker and Glenn Keys AO, were pipped at the post to become the EY World Entrepreneurs of the Year 2017.
The global awards whittled 10,000 companies down to 49 country winners. Representing Australia at the prestigious awards, Glenn and Andrew finished runners-up to Canadian Murad Al-Katib has built a business empire focussed on providing vegetable protein to the developing world and also helps to feed refugees.
Mr Al-Katib said he was very proud to be accepting the award in an audience of other country winners whom he admired, but also used his moment on stage to tell the audience that he believed that labels such as social entrepreneurship were out of date.
“There’s just entrepreneurship,” he said. “Social cause is not only important for business, it’s essential.”
Andrew and Glenn said, “We congratulate Murad on this amazing achievement. It was an honour to represent Australia at these awards. We couldn’t agree more with his sentiments around social cause for businesses. We place corporate social responsibility at the heart of what we do – through the Aspen Foundation, our workplace giving and matching programs, our commitment to those with disabilities and our Reconciliation Action Plan for the Indigenous people of Australia.”
In 2016, Aspen Medical became a certified B Corporation. A global certification system recognising companies that use business as a force for good.
“Finishing second from 10,000 great companies from around the world is very humbling. This honour is not only ours but shared with the 1,600 team members we call our colleagues, who work in 12 countries, making a difference to people’s lives every single day. From ambulance services in Texas and the Gulf region, clinics in Africa and the Pacific, to trauma hospitals in Iraq and mining, oil and gas sites across Australia. We are extremely proud of what we have been doing since 2003.”
Glenn and Andrew are the only people to have been inducted into the EY Global Hall of Fame twice.
